Pillow Talk

Welcome to my blog and the Moda Pillow Talk Blog Hop.  For those who may not know, I am the mother of 5 and a grandmother to 10.  I live in a very small town in the country and am a 4th generation quilter. I like to go boating in the summer and stay indoors in the winter (I hate the cold).  I love to spend time with my family.  I have had my pattern company Cotton Way for 21 years this month.  I feel very blessed!

We were each asked by Lissa to design a pillow that tells something about us and then answer some questions.

My pillow has 21 dots, one for each year I have been in business. I love the color red, so the dots are some of my favorite red fabrics I have used over the years.  The last dot is a sneek peek of our new fabric line coming out later this year.  I chose the border from our "Bliss" line because it is my current favorite piece of fabric that I want to use in everything.  During the past 4 years I have had the opporturnity to design fabric with my daughter, Camille, for Moda.  It has been like the frosting on the cake to be part of the Moda team. They are all such amazing people!

What is a little known fact about yourself?
One thing most people don't know, aside from my close friends and family, is that when my husband and I got married, he had casts on both arms. He had surgery on his wrists because of some old basketball injuries and was supposed to get one of them off before the wedding.  It wasn't healing right, so we polished his casts with white shoe polish the night before. When people came to congratulate us, my husband told everyone that I twisted his arms so hard to get him to marry him that I broke both his wrists.
How do you relax?

When I am at home I can't relax!   There is always to much to do.  I have to be busy or have a hand sewing project in my hands especially when I am riding in the car or watching a movie at home.  Just sitting around drives me nuts.  The only time I can really relax is when we are on vacation and I am laying on a sandy beach soaking up some sun!

What do you sleep in - PJ's or NightGown?
PJ's for sure, I hate waking up and being all twisted up in a night gown.  Camille gave me these red poka dot PJ's for Christmas last year and they are my very favorite.  They are warm and soooooo soft!  And for those who haven't heard, this week, here in Idaho, it was -20 degrees! Yes, minus 20 degrees.

What kind of pillow do you like, Hard or soft, foam or feather? And why?
I like my memory foam pillow that shapes to my face when I sleep, but when I am watching TV or reading in bed I like a big fluffy pillow to sink into.  In the winter I can't live without my electric blanket.

Do you sew in bed? Read? Watch TV? eat?
Sometimes I bind quilts in bed when I am really on a time crunch and to tired to think.  I try to read every night for a few minutes and I love to watch the news before I go to sleep.  I rarely eat in bed because my husband has this thing about crumbs in the bed. If I had my way, I would eat Doritos in bed.

How many nights have you or your spouse spent on the couch?
We have had a few, but not to many for being married 31 years.  Sometimes he snores and I can't sleep so I end up on the couch.

Nighttime toddy?
Do peanut butter M and M's count as a toddy?

Early to bed or all-nighter?
I used to stay up late most nights when I had teenagers at home that I was waiting up for.  I have had many all nighters, especially at Quilt Market time.  For the last year I have tried to have a more balanced schedule and am ususally in bed around 11:00.

Who would you most like to have a pillow fight with?
Probably my grandkids.  They are so much fun!

Now, if you made it through all that, you deserve a chance to win something!

I would love to send someone this little sewing bag filled with goodies, including my 3 new patterns!
To enter the give a way, tell me how many years you have been quilting.

Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to hop on over to Fig Tree Quilts tomorrow for more Pillow Talk!

  4. I've been quilting for just a couple of years. Sadly I've only finished 2 in that time-I need to work on my speed. I've been sewing since I was a little kid but quilting is so different than sewing clothes!

  5. Congratulatons on the 21 years!
What a unique idea for your pillow.
Red & aqua are my favorite colors recently.
I started quilting many years ago. But I like to do so many other crafts that I quit quilting for awhile to do the other things. About 2 years ago I started back with quilting. Now I'm teaching my granddaughter quilting & I'm having so much fun.

  7. I started quilting one week before I had my 2nd child. That was my first class and I was hooked. I have been doing it for almost 4 years now. I still say I am a beginner but love every minute of it.

  12. I made my first quilt way back in 1980 - it was a present for my parents. Over the years I have made quite few quilts for family and friends. Every now and then I put quilts on the backburner and do other things. I currently have two quilt tops filed away for when i feel like taking it up again. So I guess i have been quilting off and on for 30 years - gosh i feel old.

  14. I moved to Idaho about 2 1/2 years ago and did an October "Boo-tique" shop hop. Some of the stores participating were quilt shops and I fell in love with the fun fabrics. I have always sewed but wanted to try something new. Ever since I tried quilting I've been hooked. There's still a lot to learn but I love finishing each new project!

  15. I took my first quilting class when I was 18, and that was 32 years ago - but I've also taken long breaks from it. If it was a straight go, I would guess about 8 years. Thanks for the opportunity - your gift looks terrific!

  23. I made my first quilt 3 or 4 years ago but I didn't have my own sewing machine or any real idea about what I was doing. 1/2" seam allowance, on a quilt!? And then about a year ago I really started to get into quilting and have made 5 quilts in the last year. :)

  24. I've been quilting for about 20 or so years. Really, I made a quilt about 20 years ago and then quit so I could knit some stuff, and then painted some stuff, and then knitted some more, and now I'm quilting again. Only this time I have so many quilts started (and I ALWAYS finish what I start) that I will never stop quilting again. LOL. And I would love to win your bag of goodies because a gal just can't have too many WIPS you know!

  37. I am a 5th generation quilter, but I have just started! Whenever I used the beautiful quilts I inherited, I would regret that I had been too "busy" when I was younger to spend the time learning from my grandmothers and mother. So...two weeks ago I went to my fabulous local quilt shop, signed up for a class and I am now halfway through my skill building row quilt! I love it! Thank you for sharing and for your lovely giveaway!

  40. That is the cutest sewing bag! I love it! I started sewing in childhood. Picked up quilting about 6 months ago. A shattered piece of handmade pottery led me on an internet search - potter who tats - tatter who quilts - to quilters with all sorts of amazing talents. I found blog land! I found quilting! And, I am having a wonderful time.

  41. My first quilt - pretty but no points met and it was a postage stamp quilt! - was made for my infant daughter 41 years ago; I went on hiatus then to make sweet little dresses instead, but my stash dates back over 40 years. I returned to quiltmaking about 18 years ago and have in retirement found a new career buying and selling vintage quilt kits in addition to making quilts.
I'd love to win the sweet bag with three patterns and who knows what all else!

  42. I love the little bag! I have been quilting 13 years and I'm addicted to it! Like you, I can't stand to just sit and watch a movie or ride in the car. I always have a project to work on.

  43. Your pillow is lovely! As is the bag, and the patterns! I did a few hexagon flowers before I got married, almost 31 years ago, and then from the time my 1st child was born - and he is turning 30 this year! Just like you I cannot sit down without a project. Greetings from Seoul.

  44. Super bag prize! If you count the years I spent under Mom's quilt frame helping by threading her needles, I have been quilting 63 years :)
I didn't start quilting my own until Mom passed away and I received her quilting frame in 1998.. these 13 years have zoomed past!

  46. First, love your pillow, fabric and so many of your patterns. I started quilting in 1975 after seeing an article in Crafts magazine. Self taught, I have never stopped taking classes in order to correct all the bad habits I developed back then. I love every stitch I've ever taken.

  52. Hi!
I started with my first quilt about 28 years ago. It was quite a beautiful project. My youngest sister was about to have her first baby and I picked a quilt with embroidery, applique and hand quilting!! (What was I thinking?) I finished it (how amazing!)the night before her baby shower. She had her boy Ben the next day!! I've had other projects since then but that was really the best!

  63. I have been quilting for almost 20 years. The first quilt I made was called Broken Crayons. Very primitive, all homespun and hand quilted with linen thread. My son stills uses that quilt when he is home from college. Great giveaway, thank you for including me.

  64. LOVE your giveaway bag of goodies!!

How long have I been quilting..hmmm...

With the help of my dad's mom, Granny Ella, I made my first quilt blocks (by hand, I might add!) at the age of 8! Granny would not let me near her machine so I had to sew them by hand! I made 30 9-patch blocks out of fabrics from granddaddy's shirts, our dresses, and granny's clothes! Priceless!

The winter I turned 19 granny asked if I still had the blocks and I proudly told her yes!! So she called me to her house with blocks in tow and she sashed them together for me. She and I, along with my sister, granddaddy and aunt, we all quilted the quilt that day! It was my first time ever to hand quilt! First time ever to quilt in any form! and I was in hogs heaven quilting alongside my grandparents like that!

Looking back now I forgot to take a camera and catch that memory on film!! arrghh

But how long ago was that...well, I turned the big 50 this year!

So, 42 years ago I hand stitched my first quilt blocks

31 years ago, I started quilting and have not looked back!

In the summer of that same year of learning to quilt, I sold my first ever 2 quilts to a consignment shop. Those sold in August right before I turned 20! pretty good birthday present!

I began quilting for the public that year and have never laid the needle down... I started having issues with carpal tunnel in 2006 so now I do my customer quilting on the longarm. That was a learning curve in and of itself but I finally made peace with the machine and now I love the look of what comes off of the machine!

  66. Love the 'dots' pillow. What a neat idea. I have been quilting 20 years, but really quilted on my grandmother's quilts when I was about 10. She kept the frame in the kitchen and all her 21 grands could quilt if they wanted.
    Thanks

  67. I started quilting in the mid 90's, so about 15 years. I'm so amazed at how far the industry has come since I started. I had to search so hard to find certain fabrics, now there are so many to choose from, it's so hard to keep up! I love your fabrics and designs, and your daughters too!

  73. Oh my those jammies look so comfy and I love the color and polka dots who doesn't love polka dots? Camille has excellent tastes! The creativity you have and have shared with Camille just amazes me! Love your marriage story too funny! Well I feel your pain of minus 20 I live in Iowa and have shared your pain along with snow! But I love the fact that I "try" and quilt while it is snowing outside, I would say I have been at the quilting for approximately the last 12 years but sadly most of that time has been "collecting" rather than completing projects! Tee-hee-hee the past two years I have tried to turn this around stop "collecting" and start finishing, and it is starting to show some productivity! By the way I was very bad and did not catch some bliss my all time favorite line, so far, but i just found it in flannel and am dreaming of purchasing it in flannel. Won't make that mistake again-the waiting for a project before buying as i have been wishing I had purchaed at the very least a fat quarter bundle when it came out! I have never paid attention to lines in the past as I have more recently and now understand sometimes you just have to buy what you love even if you have no project in mind. (let me not lie I have a ton of projects in my mind, but I just try not to "collect" until I am READY to start on one of the million projects I WANT to make! LOL) Keep up the creativity and CONGRATULATIONS on 21 years here is to a 21 more years if you so desire, I know I hope you see no end in sight!

  97. I started quilting 2 years ago when I moved to the middle of the mojave desert with my Air Force husband. I was lonely and bored, and sooo homesick. I sometimes still am all those things, but quilting keeps me busy, gives me goals and makes me oh so happy when I complete a new project!

  98. I HEART your little sewing bag. It is SEW cute, cute, cute.

I've been sewing since I was knee high next to Grandma. She insisted I was "sewing on my own" when I could thread my own needle. LOL...I think she got tired of doing it for me.

For me, quilting is just a part of my sewing. When you start making your own Doll Blankets - I consider that quilting because Grandma made sure I did all the sewing "by hand" and "the right way". But, now?? It's ALL done by machine.

  99. I started two years ago with appliquè, then stitchery and, since one year, quilting. It's my paradise!

  100. I think I have been quilting for about 25 years. Some years more than others. I love to handquilt, but never have the time to handquilt every top that I piece. Thank goodness for longarm quilters!

  102. Hi Bonnie! Love your pillow! :-) I have been sewing since I was about 4 years old -- I have made tons of stuff -- but I haven't made an entire quilt yet. I have recently and finally figured out how to do a binding the right way -- I followed a tutorial and did the binding on a potholder -- so I'm ready for a bigger project!

  109. I have been quilting for a few years. I would watch my Grandmother and Mother quilt when I was growing up but, never got the urge to try it until now. Seems I can't get enough fabric, patterns and all the wonderful notions in the quilting world.
